Kayak Trip in Baja California

Baja California, Mexico

This kayak trip is one of North America's favourite winter sea-kayaking trips. And deservedly so! It offers the adventurer 7 glorious days voyaging around one of the most appealing islands anywhere, in state of the art expedition sea-kayaks. The rugged shoreline, off-shore islands and series of headlands and deep bays make each day a new adventure.

The west coast of Espiritu is studded with some of the most spectacular white, sandy bays you can imagine while the east coast has enormous towering cliffs, bizarre rock formations and alluring sea caves.

After paddling approximately 3-4 hours each day we will have plenty of time to enjoy fantastic snorkelling, to swim with sea lion pups, hike intriguing volcanic arroyos, bathe in the glorious Baja sun, watch manta rays leap up out of the water, admire a school of dolphins, explore hidden inland lagoons, sip a margarita and relax in great company. Isla Espiritu Santo really is paddling in paradise - just ask anyone that has been there!

Breathtaking vermillion sunrises over these islands are the inspiration for the early-riser, and photographic opportunities abound amidst the richly toned and colourful terrain. Ancient volcanic ash layers, lava flows and columnar basalts present rugged landforms that are often adorned with seabirds such a brown pelicans, Heermann’s gulls and the endemic yellow-legged gull.

Silhouettes of ospreys perched on stands of cacti, leaping manta rays, blue-footed boobies plummeting into the sea for small fishes, and schools of fish bounding clear out of the water are some of the classic Baja marvels. With luck we may spy an occasional blue, fin, or humpback whale along our passage, as well as a pod or two of common dolphins during our kayak trip.

While most days are spent on the water paddling-or sailing if blessed with a suitable wind from the north-there is ample time for snorkeling on the rocky reefs when we pull ashore, diving amid encrusting corals and colourful sea fans and in the company of a myriad of tropical fish.

How this trip makes a difference

This operator has successfully guided active, self propelled wilderness adventures in Baja California for many years. We start our trips by supporting the local communities where we travel, from shopping for our supplies to lodging, and, whenever possible, hiring local guides. Once we are dropped off in the wilderness, we are walking, or paddling across a landscape, noticing everything, but leaving nothing but footprints in our wake.

Every visitor traveling behind us will arrive feeling they are the first explorer to the area.  We carry specially made sand anchors so as not to move rocks on the beach. The little garbage we generate is carried out with us. Fresh water sources are fiercely protected against contamination.

Our trip goals include educating and connecting people to nature and the outdoors through natural history based expeditions. We diligently promote cultural preservation and environmental awareness from our pre-departure information to our no trace practices in the field. As our guests explore the wonders of our world, we hope to help everyone gain new insights and perspectives on other cultures and environments as well as our own and foster a sense of our interconnectedness.

We consider running these trips our way of giving back to the environment as our guests return better educated and likely to vote or support these environments, their culture and wildlife.
